Retrofitting in Los Angeles

The City of Los Angeles recently passed Ordinance 183893 that is requiring many buildings to invest in retrofitting. Structures with pre-1978, wood-frame, soft-story, non-ductile buildings, and more that are under the ordinance or have been deemed as having structural deficiencies are being required to update their construction with stability for earthquakes. These updates are not just for the safety of the buildings, but also the people inside and the surrounding areas.

Ordinance 183893

Ordinance 183893 is a measure put in place by the City of Los Angeles that is designed to protect businesses and citizens from the potential harm of insecure building structures during earthquakes. As you know, Southern California sits on one of the biggest fault lines in the country, making this a real problem. In this ordinance, buildings that meet the following requirements will need to invest in retrofitting services.

  • Two story or higher buildings crafted with or have existing wood frames
  • Any structures built before January 1, 1978
  • Soft-story buildings or buildings created with ground floor parking or an open floor space on the ground floor.
